Call For Papers

The editors of Preservation Education & Research invite paper proposals for the journal. Papers on all topics related to preservation education, research, and scholarship are considered. The annual deadline for submission of papers is February 1. Papers will be blind reviewed and authors notified of publication.

Manuscript Submission Guidelines

ONLY ORIGINAL WORK NEITHER PUBLISHED NOR UNDER REVIEW ELSEWHERE WILL BE CONSIDERED (authors will be required to sign and resubmit a form to this effect).

Please submit your manuscript in an electronic format. This should be either via e-mail attachment as MS Word document or PDF to Anat Geva or Nancy Volkman at PERjournal@gmail.com or as a MS Word document on a CD-R sent by regular mail to the address below.

In addition, two hard copies of the manuscript should be sent directly to the editors of this journal. Address for submissions is:

Deadline is on or before February 1 of any given year.
Manuscripts should conform to the following guidelines:
In general, submissions should follow the Chicago Manual of Style and include the following:

• A title page with the title and author(s) information (i.e., name(s), affiliation(s), postal and e-mail addresses, phone).
• A one-page abstract of 150-200-word that summarizes the research question, research approach, and summary of findings.
• A short bio(s) of the author(s) on a separate page
• The body of the paper should consist of 4500-6000 words or 15-20 pages double-space 12 font text and 10 font endnotes. For blind-review process author(s)’s information should be OMITTED from the body of the paper and be included ONLY on the title page.
• Format and Style of the Paper

Gender References

Please use gender-neutral references to the greatest extent possible.

Heads and Subheads

Please divide your article by using heads and subheads. Do not title the first section “Introduction”, and use a more specific head than “Summary” or “Conclusion” for the final section.

• Title of the paper: use upper and lower case letters (upper case for the first letter of every word that is not a preposition) and bold
• Heading: capitalize and bold
• Subheading: upper and lower case letters and bold
• Heading and subheading: same size font as the rest of the text
• Provide 2-line space before and 1-line space after a heading and a subheading   

Paragraphs

• Indent every paragraph (1 tab space), except for paragraphs that appear directly after a headline (then – do not indent).
• No extra line-spaces between paragraphs
• Provide a single space after every punctuation mark within a paragraph, and  between sentences

References and Citation

Please follow the Chicago Manual of Style author-date system for notations in the text, endnotes, and reference list. Use initial caps for all titles.

There the last example under each type of citation, indicated with a “R” is the author-date system example

Citation in the text (paper) would be simply (Smith 1999), or (Smith 1999, 20) for a quote, or (Smith 1999a) if this author had more than one publication cited in the reference list (please note no commas between author and year)

References in the list of references ((not in endnotes), should appear after the endnotes. Examples of references: 

Books:

Figures

Please include no more than 15 figures/tables/flow charts of high quality and clearly reproducible. Reference each figure/flow chart/graph within the text in the following manner: (Figure 1); Reference each table within the text in the following manner: (Table 1).

Images (photos)

• Please submit Black and White images saved in Grayscale Mode (in exceptional cases color may be considered)
• Images size at least 3'' wide or bigger
• Images resolution: 300 pixels/inch
• Do not prepare images in Word or PowerPoint applications
• Please save images in PhotoShop in PSD/TIFF/JPG formats (only one of the three)
• All figures should be sent electronically in individual files, not embedded in the paper. Label the electronic files with "figure #.jpg"

Tables

• Prepare tables in Word and save them as separate files
• All figures should be sent electronically in individual files, not embedded in the paper. Label the electronic files with "table #.doc"

Flow charts or graphs

• Do not prepare in Word or PowerPoint applications
• Please use one of the following Adobe applications
  InDesign / Illustrator - Save in EPS format and send electronically in individual files, not embedded in the paper. Label the electronic files with "figure #.eps"   
  Photoshop - 300 pixels/inch resolution; at least 3''. Save in PSD/TIFF/JPG formats and send electronically in individual files, not embedded in the paper. Label the electronic files with "figure #.psd"  or "figure #.tiff" or "figure #.jpg"

Captions

Please include the following information in the captions:

• Figure number
• A very brief description (example: a view of the living room)
• A location
• Date(s)
• Architect or/and builder
• Illustration credits are required (for example, All illustrations by author
• Please key illustration to the text
• Prepare a list of captions at the end of the document on a separate page.

Copyrights

Contributors must obtain a copy of owner's permission to reproduce any non-original illustrations, and submit it once the paper is accepted for publication. Please note, the author pays the required fees for permission to reproduce illustrations.

Punctuation, Capitalization, Numbers

Please enclose all punctuation (except semicolons) inside quotation marks

• Use serial commas
• Endnote numbers should appear at the very end of a sentence
• Please spell out numbers one through one hundred and round numbers
• Spell out centuries
• Avoid ampersands except in end matter
• Titles of books or journals should appear in Italic
• No word emphasis

Quotations

Direct quotations of five lines or more should be typed as a separate paragraph with no initial indentation and no quotation marks with a blank line space before and after.

Endnotes

• Please follow The Chicago Manual of Style.
• Number endnotes consecutively with Arabic numerals
• Place book and journal titles in italics.
• Do not abbreviate the names of journals.

Book Reviews

The journal’s Book Review editor, Catherine W. Zipf solicits book reviews. Text of reviews should conform to the requirements for articles. Titles of reviews should include: book's author, title, place of publication, publisher, date, number of pages and of illustrations, and price.

Acceptance of articles

(a) Following a blind peer-review process, the editors notify the authors on the status of the papers (accept as is; accept with minor revisions; accept with major revisions; reject).

(b) The editors send the accepted papers in their final version (after revisions, etc) to the copy editor for English editing.

(c) Authors are asked to change/correct according to the copy editor’s comments. NO changes or editorial arrangements other than indicated by the copy editor will be accepted at this point.

(d) The editors send the corrected papers to the graphic designer

(e) Authors are asked to approve the final PDF of their papers before sending them to the printer

(d) Authors are getting 2 copies of the journal and the PDF of the print of their papers

Background of the PER Journal

Mission:

As part of the NCPE 25th anniversary we proposed to launch a new scholarly journal dedicated to preservation research and education. This journal follows NCPE main mission that is to exchange and disseminate information and ideas concerning preservation education. Furthermore, with this initiative the journal, which will include articles on current developments and innovations in preservation, caters to additional goal of NCPE -- the improvement of historic preservation education programs and endeavors in the United States and elsewhere.

Procedure:

• An annual hard copy volume

• Editor(s) will be selected for a 3 years term based on their proposal. The support from their institution (university, college, department, program) may be considered as part of the proposal.

• Editor(s) will serve as non voting members on NCPE Executive Board, and as such will receive the minutes of the board's meetings

• Editor(s) will submit an annual report that will also include the budget for the journal

• Papers will go through a blind peer review process

• NCPE will be copyrighted for the content of the journal

• The journal will include a multidisciplinary Editorial Board. The 3-6 members of this board will be appointed by the NCPE Executive Board and the editors

• The journal may include ads related to preservation education (text books, programs, certificate). NCPE will determine the price for these ads. This revenue will support the editors' travel to NCPE meetings

• The journal will be part of NCPE membership benefits

• NCPE and Historic Urban Plans will fund the production of the journal

Reviewers:

The editors compiled a database of more than 200 potential reviewers in various topics pertinent to preservation education and research.
