Letter to NCPE membership about PER

Dear NCPE Members; 

Over the past year, I, along with my colleagues on the NCPE Executive Committee and the Editors of NCPE’s journal, Preservation Education and Research (PER), have solicited and reviewed proposals from university presses to publish PER for the next five years. Now in its 10th year of publication, PER has been one of the few academic journals focusing on historic preservation scholarship. PER’s scholarly impact has been significant. Articles published in PER continue to be cited not only in U.S. academic journals but by scholars throughout the world. 

We believe that now is the time to insure the long-term sustainability of PER and increase its impact in the academy. After considering proposals from the following university presses, which publish similar journals pertaining to the built environment: The University of Illinois Press, Ohio State University Press, the University of Nebraska Press, and the University of Minnesota Press, we selected the proposal from the University of Minnesota Press to publish PER. The University of Minnesota Press has an accomplished and laudable record of publishing books and journals that focus on the built environment, and specifically on historic preservation. Minnesota publishes Buildings & Landscapes: Journal of the Vernacular Architecture Forum, FutureAnterior, and Environment, Space, Place. I, along with the editors at Minnesota, believe that PER will be an excellent addition to their catalog of scholarly journals pertaining to the built environment.   

Publishing PER with the University of Minnesota Press will provide the following benefits: 

  1. PER will be published twice a year, beginning in Fall 2020. 
  2. Back issues and journal articles will be submitted to digital libraries, specifically (but not limited to) JSTOR and Project Muse. 
  3. PER will be distributed to university libraries throughout the U.S., in Europe and in Asia. 
  4. The University of Minnesota Press will maintain a website for PER.
  5. The University of Minnesota Press will manage the design layout of PER, production of issues, and PER’s distribution. 
  6. Through the Press’ online platform, the peer review process for manuscripts will be more efficient. This will insure timely responses by PER’s editors to authors and reviewers and it will facilitate expedited publication of accepted journal article manuscripts. 
  7. There will be no cost to NCPE by the University of Minnesota Press to publish PER. The Press’ editors and the NCPE Executive Committee intend for PER to become financially self-sustainable. 

The content of PER will continue to be managed by NCPE editors. But by collaborating with a university press, PER editors will focus solely on its content. NCPE members will continue to have the opportunity to request printed issues of PER; but I do hope you encourage your university library to feature PER and support it through their subscriptions to the University of Minnesota Press journals. 

I want to personally thank the members of the NCPE Executive Committee and PER’s current editors, Dr. Greg Donofrio and Dr. Chad Randl, for their assistance in these negotiations. I want to also recognize the work of the past editors of PER for their excellent work. All of the university presses commented on the quality of both the content and layout of our journal. I am encouraged about the future of PER and I look forward to this new collaboration with the University of Minnesota Press.
